The Bermuda Triangle of Productivity

This definitely depicts the fears many employers have with allowing their employees have PC’s with internet access during work time, the pull of the Social Networks into the ‘Bermuda Triangle of Productivity’ and why a lot of the companies and clients that I deal with actively blacklist social network use on work PC’s.

You will also note the scale has been changed to measurements of time rather than distance.

A link to the graphic artist’s site is given below which also gives her similar reason for coming up with the very apt idea for the graphic.

Tetris on LinkedIn

Here’s one I caught on a podcast the other day from Tekzilla. Never mind Empire Avenue or Zynga games like Farmville lets go old school and mix this with our network contacts by playing Tetris where each of the various shaped blocks contains a contact from your LinkedIn Network.

The site is developed by DropIn and can be accessed by your LinkedIn login here is a link to the DropIn site and one to the Tekzilla review site and explanation video, as they say a picture paints a thousand words…but a video can tell you a lot more.

Looking to increase the number of blocks in your Tetris set with more Construction related contacts then contact us at Onyx Consultants .

Onyx Marketing – Contract Leads – Now with Project Plans

.Following the interest made in our Contract Leads page we have found that a number of those following the page would prefer to know a few details of the projects we are involved with prior to their request to be put on the respective Tender Lists.

.So in response where we can we have added plans of the project although in most cases these are Planning Layouts, they do provide quite a bit more information about the project as they say a picture paints a thousand words.

If you are a subcontractor and are interested in being placed on the tender list of any of the projects  please contact us at

We are pleased to announce Onyx Construction Consultants have made it in to the #tCnTop100

Only a couple of days after Onyx Marketing @onyxmarketing made it in to the #tCnTop100 we are please to announce that Onyx Construction Consultants @OnyxConsultants have also made it in to the Top100.

So like ourselves can place the ‘were in the #tCnTop100’ badge on their site.

We will have to say though that this has been at the expense of dropping our own selves down to 100th place from 95 but only confirms as stated in a previous post that PeerIndex and The Construction Network are correcting some of the quirks in the rating system which is good for all of us.

Unfortunately this still does not account for some of those listed that in our and other peoples opinion should not be listed in the index as they have very little to contribute to UK construction or the built environment. We hope this will be corrected in due course.

In the mean time lets celebrate the fact that both the Onyx brands have made it into the top100 and who knows possibly top 50 in a few months?

If your listed on the PeerIndex #tCnTop100 and have a view on who is listed let us know in comments box below.

We are in the tCnTop100 in at 95

Just over a week ago we here at Onyx Marketing @onyxmarketing posted that ‘We are in the ‘tCnTop100 – well not just yet’ and were looking to award ourselves the top 100 badge for genuinely being in the top 100 because at that time we stood in the rankings at 145.

Well with a bit more involvement and effort after 3 days we had improved our position to 125, after 5 days we were in at 108 after a full week we stood at 100 and now in to the top 100 at 95.

So we are pleased to announce we can now award ourselves the ‘were in the #tCnTop100’ badge which we will place here on our blog site.

Our sister company Onyx Construction Consultants Ltd @onyxconsultants has also done fairly well improving its position from 197 position a week ago to 107 today and we are sure it won’t be long before they to can display the badge on their blog site.

If you are still wondering what this is all about see our previous posting or indeed connect direct to the tCnTop100 site or PeerIndex to find out more.

If you are on the index let us know in the comments box below.

Quora Now Allows Self-Promotion

Quora the Q&A site has lifted its ban on self promotion.

For those of you out there in construction who are not aware of Quora, it is a web site with which you can register usually through your twitter account and basically post Questions about various topics which are open to Answers from others registered on the site interested in those topics, alternatively you can express an interest in topics and answer questions posted by others. A more detailed explanation on how it all works is given by Quora themselves.

Why is this site and its allowance of self promotion useful?

Well Quora is highly regarded as a site and used by marketers in other industries also Google now indexes Quora as part of their ‘realtime’ search option.

Oh and lets not forget that you can get helpful advice and answers to the questions you have, as well as show your expertise in answering question in your own specialist knowledge topics and being able to promote yourself while your at it.

Although Quora do say

‘that users are required in their answers to disclose relevant affiliations (i.e., “I’m an investor in this company,” or “I’m a graduate of this school”)’

All this means, if you haven’t been using Quora to promote your company, now’s the time to jump in. With a free pass to send your message to targeted consumers, coupled with an automatic pop in Google search. The only downside is the time cost of adding another social media site to your daily routine but I believe it is worthwhile as I’ve also got few questions I need answers for.

Are you using Quora yet? Let me know about your experience.

We are in the tCnTop100 – well not just yet

It’s had a bumpy start and some controversy is being raised over some of the listings but the tCnTop100 is starting to take shape and reflect more of what’s happening and who’s who out there in the UK construction twitter world.

For those of you still not aware ‘tCnTop100’ the people who started it The Construction Network explain it as follows:

The tCnTop100 identifies and promotes the ‘Top Tweeters’ in the UK Built Environment. It’s part of an initiative to help industry individuals and organisations understand, embrace and utilise the power of new media…First published in Construction News it will constantly change depending on the twitter activity of those featured.”

We had the advantage of being listed before it was published in the Construction News together with our sister company so already had a small foothold on the listing at 219 for @onyxmarketing and 329 for @onyxconsultants which was a bit surprising as the onyx ‘consultants’ brand had the greater number of followers and sent the most tweets?

Registering directly on the site has certainly helped correct some of the in-balance as it allowed Peerindex to look at our twitter accounts and history in more detail which has also gone along way to increase our rankings (at time of writing) to 145 and 197.

So with a little bit more involvement and a few more followers who knows! We may soon be in the top 100 and genuinely award ourselves the ‘I’m in the #tTnTop100’ badge and post it on our site.

As a Guy in the Construction Industry I have to get one of these…

Thought as we have the long Royal Bank Holiday weekend ahead of us I would show some items of intrigue and interest which may end up on a shopping list

I’ve not added any Links  but all are search-able on the interweb and available on boys toys and gadget websites.

The Pizza Boss 3000 – Pizza Slicer

This one is certainly on my Fathers Day / Birthday (as its about the same time) list only problem is to show it off you need pizza which is not a food on my diet list…well sure I can make an exception for my Birthday.

. .

Bosh Corkscrew Attachment

One for the BBQ season me thinks, help convert some of us beer drinkers in to sophisticated wine connoisseurs unfortunately its a bit pricey and I cant help feel I could get quite a few screw top wine bottles for the the same money or go back to beer.

Fridge Beer Stacker (from your local high street stationer)

Talking of beer here’s a gadget I already own, just not thought of how practical it is.  Good to find an alternative use for it as it would have become redundant once we all get our iPads / tablets and don’t need to clip stacks of paper together.

Also remember seeing a plastic fridge bottle stacker on an episode of Dragons Den which the dragons were willing to pledge thousands over, not so sure what they would think of the their gadget once they see this…and Theo owning a stationers!

Oh and not forgetting a gift for the wife

Not sure what this is called just know it would be frowned on by the HSE if they saw it used on any construction site, but ideal for in the house for reaching the top shelf of the wardrobe in our case the handbags, hats, handbags, scarfs and handbag shelf .

If you have enjoyed this post leave a comment or if there are any construction / domestic related gadgets you’ve seen let me know and and leave a link in the box below.
